The story behind SwellOracle

Before it became an app, SwellOracle was a physical lamp: a small ocean oracle built around one simple surf question: is it worth going out today?

A simple answer for a surf routine

SwellOracle grew out of a very familiar habit: checking swell reports, forecasts and buoy readings again and again before deciding whether to surf.

The original idea was to turn that repetitive check into a visible signal, something that could sit on a table and quickly show whether the ocean looked small, promising or energetic.

The first Surf Orb

The first version was a lamp connected to online wave data. It showed information on a small LCD screen and changed color according to wave height.

That physical object brought together surfing, data and electronics. It was not meant to replace local judgment, but to provide a clear first signal before opening several forecast pages.

From lamp to web

Over time, the same idea evolved into a web and mobile experience. Instead of depending only on an object at home, SwellOracle now lets users follow favorite buoys, model points and alerts from a phone.

The core idea is still the same: take complex ocean data and present it in a simple, useful way for real surf decisions.

Practical takeaway

SwellOracle began as a handmade lamp for reading the ocean at a glance. Today it keeps that same intention: making swell data simpler, more visual and more useful.
